Youth promotion

Jugendförderung - Nikolaus Harnoncourt Zentrum

Education

Nikolaus and Alice Harnoncourt were deeply committed to the holistic education of young people. He never tired of pointing out to teachers the great importance and responsibility of a fundamental musical education for our children. He himself was able to pass on his enthusiasm, joy and passion for music to young people in particular like no other. In 2005, Harnoncourt conducted the Mur-Mürzzuschlag Youth Orchestra at the Austria Centre Vienna.

Performance experience

With encouragement from Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Ernst Smole (Nikolaus Harnoncourt Forum) developed the performance internship for Styrian music schools in the 1990s – a concept for avoiding performance anxiety and promoting personal development, for which he was awarded the Nikolaus Harnoncourt Prize of the Canton of Zurich in 2008.

In partnership with the St. Georgen im Attergau regional music school and the Upper Austrian regional music school organisation, the NHZ is implementing the performance internship in an adapted form as a pilot project for Upper Austria. Together with music physiology and motivation courses, the free programme is aimed at all age groups and instruments.

Youth orchestra and paint music

The International Harnoncourt Days in St. Georgen were launched in 2017 with the Attergau Youth Orchestra.

Since 1992, Irene Troi and Stephen Lloyd have been providing sustainable early support with their youth orchestra in Brixen with great support from the Harnoncourts. The project was awarded the Nikolaus Harnoncourt Prize 2003 by the Canton of Zurich. www.youmago.org

Children in this initiative paint Harnoncourt’s language pictures and intuitively understand his imaginary world.
